Rangers have been linked with a move to bring Jordan Henderson to Ibrox this summer.

After the disappointment of a trophyless campaign, Rangers will be fully aware of just how much work awaits them in the summer transfer window, and even before that.

Before any other considerations are made, the managerial situation at Ibrox needs to be sorted, with Andrew Cavenagh set to hold fresh talks this week.

Once that is out of the way, the Light Blues have a hell of a lot of work to do on the recruitment front, and Derek Ferguson has urged one of their targets to seek a move elsewhere already.

Henderson told to join Sunderland in emotional homecoming

Rangers need reinforcements in all areas of the pitch this summer if they are to have a fighting chance of competing with Celtic next season.

With Nico Raskin potentially on his way out, the Gers will need more depth and quality in the midfield areas, with or without him.

Henderson has been linked with a move to Rangers, but after Sunderland sealed promotion back to the Premier League, Ferguson believes a move to Wearside would be the best option for the England international.

Speaking to Mackem News, he said: "He’s a top player, there’s no doubt about that. He’s got a great mentality and has won some of the biggest honours around. But I just think that at the age of 34, his best days are maybe behind him.

“Could he potentially have a player-coach role at Rangers? I don’t know. But as a player Rangers should be looking at players in their early 20s who have room to grow. If Sunderland came calling, I’d prefer to go to Sunderland.”

At 34 years old, Henderson has the experience to make a difference wherever he goes, but the idea of returning to his boyhood club may prove to be far too appealing in the summer.

Rangers to look elsewhere for midfield general

The idea of bringing Henderson to Ibrox is a good one, but at this stage, it seems like one that is no longer feasible with Sunderland returning to the top flight of English football.

However, the addition of an experienced midfielder makes plenty of sense this summer, and is certainly an avenue that the Gers need to go down.

With or without Henderson, this summer is going to be a busy one for Rangers, and any decision they make must be the right one, after far too many mistakes.
