Ex-FIFA ref calls out John Beaton after Rangers vs Celtic despite law correct
After smashing their rivals 3-0 at Ibrox in the Premier Sports Cup last week, it was Scottish Premiership action today.
With no away fans again, it started with fire and fury as the Bears tried to silence the crowd.
Derek McInnes was booked after five minutes after a coming together with his opposite numbers, and that set to tone.
Rangers rode that wave and went 1-0 ahead through Ryan Naderi, tapping home after a parried long-range shot.
But, Keith Hackett was left scratching his head at the officiating.
What could John Beaton have done different?
While McInnes and another of Celtic's staff were booked, it was so early in the game.
Beaton isn't exactly inexperienced, he has been around the block and officiated many an Old Firm fixture.
So, Hackett believes that the referee could have had a quiet word with both sets of coaches and give a final warning.
The ex-FIFA official did admit that while not wrong by law, you have to have an understanding of the game.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Hackett said: "Really disappointing that the Manager has been caught up in the emotion of an event and got an early card.
"Whilst in law the referee is correct, frankly where is the management of the incident. Where is the calm approach of the referee to offer a word of advice?
“Mr McInnes, 'I understand the occasion, please can I see an improvement in your behaviour' That’s how it could be handled."
VAR call stops unbelievable moment
While correct by law again, the handball to prevent Olwethu Makhanya's volley saved Celtic.
Beaton actually allowed the goal to stand, but the South African did handle it before looping it into the top corner.
That was a 'by-law' call that was incorrect, but it did stop absolute greatness.
Watching the Celtic fans crumble as the game went on, and when this goal was initially allowed was sensational for those in blue, though.
It's a huge three points for Rangers, who go into the extended international break only two behind now and real momentum.
As for McInnes, he won't care about that yellow card now.
