Derek McInnes 'would have wanted to be like Steven Gerrard' after Rangers win vs Celtic

Derek McInnes took it all in his stride after guiding Rangers to yet another win over Celtic on Sunday.

Seven days after smashing them at Ibrox in the Premier Sports Cup, the Bears went to Parkhead and left with all three points in the Scottish Premiership, too.

McInnes became the first manager since Walter Smith to win his first two Old Firm games in charge, thanks to Ryan Naderi.

It sends Rangers two points behind Celtic despite their poor start, and with real belief that they can lift the title.

Steven Gerrard was the last do that, and everybody will remember him grabbing the camera and screaming after victory of his own at Parkhead.

And Tom English believes that's exactly what McInnes would have wanted.

How did Derek McInnes celebrate win?

It was a small fist pump and acknowledgement of board members in the stands for the Scotsman.

After hugs and jubilation on the pitch, he waved his squad inside quickly as fans waited back at Ibrox to celebrate again.

Writing for the BBC after the domination at Parkhead, English shared what he expected from McInnes.

"At the end, every fibre of Derek McInnes' being must have wanted to have one of those Steven Gerrard moments, a scream of delight and relief into a Celtic Park camera lens, a human reaction to a significant victory on hostile terrain," he wrote.

"McInnes, though, showed little emotion. He shook hands with a now beleaguered Martin O'Neill and pretty much got out of there."

Heading into the international break, Rangers are absolutely flying.

McInnes, however, did admit that he wasn't about the go overboard, given they are still two points behind and sitting second.

Celtic and Martin O'Neill are rattled right now, though, and if they don't respond after this extended break, they're in real trouble.

Rangers have used crashing out of Europe completely to their advantage, and are already favourites to lift the Premier Sports Cup.

Winning the first silverware of the season in Scotland could set them well on their way to another title, something not done since Gerrard.

There were fans in Parkhead that day when he screamed in delight, but this was all about the silence and boos of the home end.

McInnes is riding a wave of excellence right now, and rather than celebrating now, he's making sure it continues.
