Derek McInnes' Rangers experiment must end after 'absolute shambles' vs Jagiellonia

Derek McInnes was on the receiving end of another Rangers reality check against Jagiellonia Bialystok on Thursday.

The Scottish manager dropped points in the opening game of the season against Dundee United and lost 2-1 to the Polish side away from home in the first leg of the Europa League third qualifying round on 6 August.

While the Gers took an early lead at Chorten Arena, a couple of defensive errors saw them quickly surrender it.

McInnes started with Emmanuel Fernandez and Dujon Sterling as his centre-back pairing away from Ibrox and Jagiellonia exploited it.

The home side looked threatening on the counter and could have scored more.

Olwethu Makhanya was left on the bench, while Ben Godfrey is out injured for a few weeks, leading to the 55-year-old head coach's experiment with the backline.

Sterling started as the left-centre-back against Jagiellonia and had an evening to forget.

Fernandez and the Englishman's partnership shouldn't be a thing in the future after their underwhelming displays.

With the Gers 2-1 down, they almost conceded a third in the first half after a "shocking" pass from Sterling.

The 26-year-old's attempted pass to his Nigerian teammate was short and subsequently intercepted near the halfway line, leading to a counter from the Polish side.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on 6 August, commentator Liam McLeod said, "We could have been looking at an absolute shambles at the back there."

Steven Thompson, who was the co-commentator, added, "Yeah, it was shocking, it really was. Got away with one there. It's Sterling with the pass into Fernandez. It's a poor pass. It's nicked."

While it has only been two games, Ross McCrorie hasn't lived up to expectations so far at Rangers.

The right-back came on as a second-half substitute against Dundee United and started the game in Poland.

At the end of last season, the Light Blues knew they needed defensive reinforcements after James Tavernier's departure.

The ex-Bristol City defender doesn't look good enough for the Glaswegian outfit.

Sterling has struggled under McInnes so far as well, and the Englishman's persistent fitness issues are well known.

It would be unwise for the Govan side not to strengthen the right-back area further before deadline day.
