Dan Neil is back on Rangers' radar, and Danny Rohl will surely be ecstatic.

The Gers were linked with the Sunderland midfielder in the winter window, but he ended up joining Ipswich Town on loan.

However, their stance on a permanent deal is unknown, and the Light Blues could be set to swoop in and rekindle their chase for his signature, according to the Scotsman.

If they sign the 24-year-old, who has made three Premier League appearances, it would grant Rohl's wish, and potentially help him take his side to the next level.

Rangers need significant additions, if they are to have any chance of catching Celtic and Hearts next season.

What has Rohl said about Rangers squad?

Rohl has spoken of his desire to add leaders to his side, and Neil would fit the bill on that front.

The German manager has admitted that the side needs players like the Mackems ace in their ranks, although he did not name him directly.

He said: “We need new leaders, more leaders for the dressing room, to set our standards that we want on the training pitch, in difficult moments in the game.

"I think this is crucial."

Why Neil would be the perfect fit

Neil would be a perfect candidate for Rohl's plan to add leadership as he has already captained the Stadium of Light outfit 53 times in his 201 appearances.

The signing makes too much sense for the Gers, as they lack players with the experience that he has, already in his relatively short career and do not have many standout characters at the moment.

Neil would bring tenacity, mental fortitude, and bite to a Light Blues side that has been lacking that, especially in the engine room, but also all over the pitch.

He has experience of stepping up in the biggest pressure moments, and the expectation in the North East of England is similar to the level in Govan.

Therefore, he would likely be able to cope with the supporters' demands in G51, rather than crumbling under the pressure like some new signings do when they sign for the Glasgow giants.

Given the limitations of his side and the fact that captain James Tavernier is leaving on a free transfer, it makes perfect sense to bring Neil in to try and make the squad stronger, both on and off the pitch.
