Chris Sutton shares reaction to Rangers defeat v Red Star, praises Allan McGregor
Chris Sutton has congratulated Rangers for their progression to the Europa League quarter-final and singled out goalkeeper Allan McGregor for his performance.
The Bears were beaten 2-1 on the night in Belgrade after an Mirko Ivanic goal after ten minutes and a stoppage time penalty El Fardou Ben, but Ryan Kent's second half goal in between them gave them the breathing room they needed.
It's the first time they've reached the last eight since making the final back in 2008, and former Celtic striker Sutton took to his Twitter account to praise them and admitted it was a 'good night for Scottish football'.
Sutton also singled out goalkeeper Allan McGregor for his excellent performance, as the 40-year-old shot stopper continued his recent good form with a string of brilliant saves.
After his penalty save in the first leg, McGregor produced three excellent saves in this game plus a string of others to keep his team in the game and eventually guide them to the next round.
Justified
McGregor started the new year in poor form and he made several costly errors that essentially cost Rangers their position at the top of the league.
But despite calls for him to retire and be dropped by manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the manager stuck with him and his decision has now surely been justified.
McGregor has been excellent in recent weeks and his experience and leadership have helped the side get within touching distance of Celtic and progress in Europe now.
The light blues feel they have a great chance of winning the competition now, being just four games away from a final and with an Old Firm derby coming up after the international break the title race is still on.
McGregor has proven himself to still be one of the best, if not the best, goalkeepers in the country despite his age and the fans couldn't be happier with his resurgence.
