Chris Sutton scoffs at 'performance of nonsense' after what Rangers boss Derek McInnes did
Chris Sutton misses absolutely no opportunity to dig out anything at Rangers.
There is no love lost between the former Celtic striker and the Rangers fanbase, especially given his propensity to constantly take jibes.
Rangers are heading into the first of an Old Firm double-header in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals at Ibrox on Sunday.
After an inauspicious start under Derek McInnes, Rangers have found a bit of momenum with four straight Scottish Premiership wins.
The latest of those was a last-gasp 1-0 win over St Mirren on Wednesday, with Bojan Miovski netting late on to secure all three points.
And Sutton scoffed at one thing he saw McInnes do in Rangers' latest victory.
What did Derek McInnes do in Rangers vs St Mirren?
McInnes grew up a Rangers fan, so is all too aware of the pressure and demands for success at Ibrox.
After embarrassingly being knocked out of the Europa League and Conference League, he knows domestically Rangers have to deliver.
Against St Mirren, it looked like being a hugely frustrating evening, until Miovski lifted one in to spark wild celebrations.
Derek McInnes was spotted clapping along with Rangers fans during the game, while the players stayed out for an extended period to celebrate with supporters.
Writing in the Daily Record, Sutton felt that McInnes' actions were somewhat performative.
He opined: "Derek McInnes has started to win over Rangers fans and they lapped up him clapping along to the sing-song after they scraped past St Mirren.
"That was a performance of nonsense and just playing to the galleries.
"But it will be a different story if they come a cropper at home to Celtic in the Premier Sports Cup, with no away fans in the ground.
"McInnes is a top manager and he walked into a difficult position. There’s still a sense he’s throwing everything at it to see what works but there is no doubt Rangers can cause Celtic problems."
Oh, ligthen up Chris!
Look, no one is pretending that a narrow 1-0 win over St Mirren is going to be enough to convince Rangers supporters that everything is hunky-dory.
Moreover, all four victories have been secured by single-goal margins, so of course there is another level to reach.
But, McInnes was merely caught up in the moment, and he wanted to share in the joy of the supporters.
Call it cringe if you want, call it performative, frankly call it whatever you like.
Ultimately, though, it was just a man soaking in the atmosphere after securing a big three point before two crucial games with Celtic.
Lighten up, Chris, it really is not that deep.
