Chris Sutton has admitted there is a possibility Aberdeen could split Celtic and Rangers in the Scottish Premiership table this season.

Philippe Clement's side currently sits third in the table after seven games having already dropped four points, while both the Dons and the Hoops have managed to win all of their domestic games.

Although there is a lot of football to be played over the coming months and the Gers aren't completely out of the title race, Sutton has suggested Jimmy Thelin's side could upset the Old Firm's structure this term.

Speaking on It's All Kicking Off (14 October, 34:05) he said: "I think Aberdeen have won every game and so have Celtic this season.

"Steve was talking about a team outside of the top two, so there is a possibility Aberdeen could split Celtic and Rangers this season."

After a slow start to the Premiership season, it feels like the Gers and Clement have finally begun to find their feet domestically this term, particularly after they moved back into Ibrox.

Although the early gap at the top of the table will be slightly daunting to Gers supporters, it will only take one or two results for the cat to be put back among the pigeons to put the race for the title to open up again.

If Clement's side wants to win the Premiership this term, they are going to have to not only fix their Old Firm record but also start picking up points against Aberdeen. Thelin's side isn't perfect, but they have shown already this term that they won't be easy to beat.

On top of that, the Gers will know that they will have to beat Motherwell and one of these sides this term if they are to get their hands on the League Cup.

Aberdeen aren't here just to make up the numbers and the Light Blues have to hit the ground running after the international break to stop Sutton's prediction from coming true.
