Carlo Ancelotti to be Ibrox regular amid major Rangers next manager twist

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers are days - if not hours - away from announcing their next permanent manager after confirming Barry Ferguson will not stay on.

Ferguson stepped in following Philippe Clement's sacking and oversaw some major results, such as winning away at Celtic and overcoming Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

However, Rangers chiefs have other candidates in mind with regards to who should be in charge from 2025-26 and beyond.

Steven Gerrard is now the favourite to become next Rangers manager, while Russell Martin is also said to have held talks.

It was not long ago that Davide Ancelotti was considered to be on the verge of being appointed, though, and that may still yet be the case.

Davide Ancelotti not out of running for Rangers job yet

Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack reported on Wednesday (21 May) that Ancelotti still fancies his chances of becoming Rangers manager.

It is yet another twist in the race to find Clement's next permanent successor, and it is one that could lead to an exciting development in the stands.

Asked for his thoughts on Ancelotti potentially coming on board, Derek Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News: "Well his father would be in there as an influence. He's of course taking over as Brazil manager, but you could see him popping in regularly at Ibrox.

"That's certainly not a bad thing. It's always good to have experience in the background, and Ancelotti is the best of the best. So yeah, that quite excites me."

Carlo Ancelotti could have influence at Rangers

Nobody needs telling about just how incredible a manager Carlo Ancelotti is. Son Davide may not be as experienced, but he can - as Ferguson says - lean on his father for advice.

If that means getting Carlo down to the training ground every now and then, it goes without saying that will be hugely beneficial to the Gers.

Appointing Gerrard will split the fanbase somewhat, whereas bringing Ancelotti on board might just get every excited in unison.

It is a massive call for the Ibrox board to make, but hopefully they come to a decision one way or another very soon.
