Billy Dodds drops Rangers title prediction live on BBC Sportscene after what he's seen

Rangers have to build momentum and keep pressure on Celtic despite not having "enough" to win the Premiership this season, according to Billy Dodds.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene (15 September), the ex-Gers striker said that having seen his former side play eight matches this season, five in the league, they don't have what it takes to topple Celtic.

After watching the Light Blues return to winning ways with a 1-0 victory at Dundee United, Dodds added that Philippe Clement must decide his best starting XI and look to bridge the gap on Celtic's lead.

Dodds said: "On the evidence of what I've seen, I don't think they'll have enough this season, but they have got to try and close the gap and make sure that they keep the pressure on Celtic as the season goes on – not make it easy for them.

"They've got a lot of new players, they're going to have to get their best 11, and get a regular starting XI of what he thinks his best 11 are and go with that.

"Get a momentum going, and try and win some games just to keep on Celtic's coattails – but that's easier said than done."

Can Rangers keep up the pace on Celtic?

Going into their match at Tannadice a whopping eight points behind Celtic and joint-league leaders Aberdeen, the Gers simply had to come away from their fifth top-flight match of the new season with three points.

The fifth league game of the campaign being a must-win is arguably strange, but this is a club where the pressure is always on, particularly when their rivals across the city have had a perfect start.

Closing that gap to five will hopefully give Clement's side impetus to go and build a winning run that goes on for several games, especially given the depth of squad the Belgian will soon have at his disposal.

The injury-hit Oscar Cortes' first start of the season was productive in the opening 45 minutes, and his half-time replacement Nedim Bajrami also made a highly anticipated Rangers debut.

Dodds' verdict of the Gers not having enough to catch Celtic may prove to be true, but Clement, his squad and the Ibrox faithful will all be hoping their Tannadice win is the start of a successful period.
