BBC Scotland pundit loses mind over 'unbelievable' Mason Munn footage in Rangers U18s win v Aberdeen

BBC Scotland pundit Richard Foster hailed Mason Munn's "unbelievable" save as Rangers Under-18s won the Scottish Youth Cup final 2-1 against Aberdeen Under-18s at Hampden Park.

Munn, 18, pulled off a superb stop to deny Aberdeen's Alfie Bavidge late on, preserving the Gers' 2-1 advantage.

Foster was effusive in his praise of the teenage goalkeeper - but was equally critical of the defending that led to the chance.

Speaking live on BBC Sport Scotland (1 May), he said: "What a save. What an unbelievable save.

"It's so poor from, I think it's Connor Campbell, [who] just leaves the ball [and] Leyton Grant is then in all kinds of trouble - expects his mate to go and head it.

"Tell you what, [Bavidge] gets away a fantastic strike - that is an unbelievable save. That should be two each."

Mason Munn will hope to have caught Rangers boss Philippe Clement's eye

Munn will hope that his shot-stopping heroics may have caught the eye of Rangers head coach Philippe Clement, who was in attendance at Hampden Park - along with first-team captain James Tavernier - as the Under-18s lifted the Scottish Youth Cup trophy.

The teenage goalkeeper - born in Northern Ireland - joined the club's youth set-up from Glentoran in 2022.

He is one of four goalkeepers who have featured for the B team this season, along with Kieran Wright, Lewis Budinauckas and Alfie Halliwell.

Munn faces stiff competition to break into the first team set-up - but amid speculation that Robby McCrorie could move on in search of more regular minutes and with Jon McLaughlin set to turn 37 in September, the 18-year-old will hope impressive performances such as this one at Hampden Park can convince Clement of his credentials as a third-choice option.

Alternatively, if the Belgian head coach sees enough potential in Munn, he could sanction a loan for the youngster to help him develop further in a more competitive environment.

One way or another, that "unbelievable" save certainly won't have done his chances any harm.
