Steven Thompson was left gushing over Nicky Devlin for his cross to Aberdeen striker Ester Sockler in the League Cup final v Rangers.

The BBC pundit believed that any touch on the ball would've seen Aberdeen opening the scoring in an extremely tight game on Sunday, 17 December.

He told the BBC at 16:17, "It's a front-post run, it's bread and butter and the ball in is sensational. I don't know if Sokler thinks it's going in anyway and decides to leave it. Any sort of contact and it ends up in the back of the net."

Fortunate

The incident was a major scare for Rangers as it involved a potential defensive lapse that could have resulted in conceding a goal.

Devlin's delivery of a decent looking ball into the box created a prime goal-scoring opportunity, especially with a player making a front-post run.

Sokler's failure to make any contact with the ball at the near post introduced an element of unpredictability and risk for Rangers.

There certainly was a stroke of good fortune for Gers as the score was still 0-0 and a lead for Aberdeen would've been a tricky one.

They would've parked the bus and used their physicality to break up play and ensure that Gers could not take control of proceedings again.

It was a tough one until then with neither side really grabbing the contest by the stuff of its neck and looking to pepper the opposition with chances.
