Barry Ferguson shares welcome Rangers dilemma after what he's seen from 'outstanding' ace

Rangers are riding a wave of momentum under Derek McInnes right now.

The Gers have racked up five consecutive wins, including last week's 3-0 thumping of Celtic in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals at Ibrox.

Dan Neil was the unlikely hero of that clash, the midfielder scoring twice either side of Kevin Kelsy's first Rangers goal.

Rangers have to prove they can do it all over against their rivals as they meet again in the Scottish Premiership at Parkhead on Sunday.

Victory would leave Rangers just two points adrift of Celtic going into the season's first international break.

And McInnes could soon have one welcome dilemma on his hands, as highlighted by former Gers captain and ex-interim manager Barry Ferguson.

What selection issue could Derek McInnes face at Rangers?

McInnes made no fewer than 14 signings during the transfer window to bolster his squad.

Among that raft of incomings was the signing of AEK Athens left-back James Penrice.

It was expected that Penrice would largely act as back-up to Tuur Rommens, who moved to Ibrox back in January.

But Rommens suffered an ultimately injury early in the campaign to present an opportunity to Penrice.

Ferguson waxed lyrical over Penrice's performances since coming in the team, and spoke about how difficult Rommens will find it to get back in the team.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said: "It's good to see Tuur Rommens back, I spoke to him Sunday and he was back training.

"But I tell you what, he's got a job on his hands to get back into the team.

"James Penrice, we've been speaking about Dan Neil, rightly so two big goals, big Kelsy getting a goal.

"But I tell you, see since he's come in, he's been excellent James Penrice. I knew it was going to be a good signing but I tell you what, I think he's been outstanding."

Penrice or Rommens - who gets the nod at Rangers?

This is exactly the sort of headache McInnes will want at Rangers.

For Rangers to be successful, they need quality strength in depth all over the pitch.

When both are fit, they certainly have that at left-back, with Rommens a strong performer since arriving in the winter.

Penrice is staking his claim too, though, and against Celtic showed just how important he can be.

Out of possession, Penrice did a really important job of almost acting as another midfield shield for McInnes' side.

It is difficult to say with confidence who will get the nod, but right now Penrice probably has the upper hand.
