Andy Halliday bemoans 'really poor' Rangers element despite win vs St Johnstone
Andy Halliday still thinks Rangers have another 'string to add to their bow' this season.
Derek McInnes' side have really been motoring since their shock UEFA Conference League qualification exit to Jablonec in late August.
Indeed, in the nine games in all competitions Rangers have played since then, they've won eight and drawn one.
They've kept pace with Celtic at the top, and now look like a side that is more than capable of lifting the Scottish Premiership title this season.
But this class of 2026-27 aren't the finished article, and in some respects, McInnes probably won't want that to be the case just yet.
However, Saturday's 4-0 victory over St Johnstone did highlight an area of their attacking play that could require more work on the training ground.
What was Andy Halliday not impressed by in Rangers win vs St Johnstone?
Saturday afternoon saw Rangers make light work of St Johnstone with an emphatic win at Ibrox.
The away side did manage to reach half time just the one goal down after Kevin Kelsy's 29th-minute opener, but Gers put them to bed after the break.
Kelsy added another to his tally, whilst Ryan Naderi and Tochi Chukwuani both got on the scoresheet too.
The second of Kelsy's brace came from a corner-kick situation, with the Venezuelan tucking away a side-footed volley finish on the back post.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound via BBC Sport after the game, Halliday was still critical of Rangers' execution from set-pieces.
"One of Rangers' main strengths from last season was set-pieces," the former Gers star said.
"Rangers have had countless corners and wide free-kicks this season when it's not been James Tavernier delivering it. The standard of delivery this year has been really poor from set-pieces.
"They've got Naderi, Kelsy, (Emmanuel) Fernandez, they've got giants to hit but the delivery for the most part hasn't been good enough.
"On the 11th corner today they finally scored. Talk about adding strings to their bow. They need to get back to the point where they are a real danger from set-pieces."
So, just how poor have Rangers been from attacking set-pieces this season?
How many goals from set-pieces have Rangers scored this season?
Having as many ways to win matches up your sleeve is a crucial ingredient to a successful season.
Rangers won't be able to win every game they play this season simply by cutting through defences from open play.
Some will be scrappy and tight affairs, and when those type of matches arrive, set-pieces can really show their worth.
Per Sofascore, Rangers win an average of 7.7 corners per game in the league this season, with only Celtic (9.0) averaging more.
However, Gers have only netted twice from set-piece situations, with Naderi's winner against Celtic on 20 September and Kelsy's on Saturday.
As Halliday points out, to have some of the aerial threats Rangers have in this side, that's a very disappointing return.
McInnes' Hearts side finished joint-top with Gers last season for 23 set-piece goals scored, so the Bears boss will be unhappy with his team's performance in this area too.
