Ally McCoist has destroyed Manchester United star Harry Maguire for his defending against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Gers thought that they had taken a point at Old Trafford on 23 January after Cyriel Dessers pushed Maguire to the side to magnificently control and finish to make it 1-1.

The under-fire Bears striker was on top of the world for only a matter of minutes though, as Bruno Fernandes scored to make it 2-1 to the home side and take all three points.

Speaking live on TNT Sports (23 January, 21:51), McCoist hit out after Dessers' goal, saying: "What a touch and what a left foot finish. That is superb.

"Shocking defending. The touch and the finish back across the goalkeeper is absolutely first class."

Cyriel Dessers proves his class for Rangers

The 30-year-old has been heavily linked with an Ibrox exit in recent weeks but nearly gave the travelling support a historic result.

His finish and the way he bullied the England international beforehand was a reminder to Philippe Clement of how good he can be.

Unfortunately, it will now mean very little as the Gers dropped to 13th place in the league phase after the heartbreaking defeat in Manchester.

The Govan side can still qualify automatically with a win on the final matchday against Union Saint-Gilloise but they would need other results to go in their favour.

Clement's side will be kicking themselves given the nature of the loss, with two costly errors being the difference between the sides.

It is now time to kick on, with positive performances against Manchester United and Tottenham in this competition, consistency is needed back in Scotland.
