Rangers are considering bringing Steven Gerrard back as their permanent manager at the end of the season.

Barry Ferguson was tasked with holding the fort for Rangers for the rest of the season after Philippe Clement was sacked in February.

While the 49-year-old did well to take the Light Blues to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League, a record of four wins in 10 games is unlikely to earn him the job permanently at Ibrox.

Any decision regarding the managerial situation will have to wait until the takeover by the US consortium involving the 49ers Enterprises is finalised, but the incoming owners are nevertheless expected to hire a new manager.

Rangers plot Gerrard reunion

Rangers will look to hire a new, 'high-profile' manager this summer, with a reunion with Gerrard on the cards, according to TEAMtalk

The news outlet reported via their website on Sunday (20 April) that the English tactician still has admirers at Ibrox, and an approach to bring him back to Glasgow could soon be made.

Gerrard remains a popular figure in Auchenhowie after leading the Light Blues to Premiership glory in the 2020-21 season.

With incoming owners, 49ers, plotting a strong managerial appointment, the Liverpool icon is in the frame for an Ibrox return.

As for Gerrard, he would be 'very open' to taking the reins at Rangers, having been sacked as the Al-Ettifaq manager in Saudi Arabia in January.

One reason he is ready to reunite with the Scottish giants is that he knows he would have more backing in the transfer market under the new owners than he did the last time.

However, an even more ambitious managerial appointment could be on the cards at Rangers, with Mourinho mooted as an option.

The Portuguese is contracted to Fenerbahce until 2026, but would be open to taking the reins at Ibrox if such an opportunity arises.

However, Premiership heavyweights are yet to approach the veteran manager over such a move, leaving Gerrard as the favourite to replace Ferguson at the end of the season.
