Ryan Jack return to Rangers on special contract ruled out based on issue at Ibrox

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers need to cut all ties with Ryan Jack and not consider any deal to bring him back to the club, says Derek Ferguson.

The club confirmed on 1 June the Scotland international was leaving at the expiry of his Ibrox contract but it was instantly suggested by talkSPORT broadcaster David Tanner that the Light Blues might investigate a "pay-per-play" contract for the oft-injured midfielder.

Former Gers favourite Ferguson doesn't seen any point in prolonging the connection in light of the long-term fitness issues Jack has had, and doesn't expect the player or manager Philippe Clement to be interested in such an arrangement.

"No I think they should cut all ties to be honest, there's no worth to it," he said, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News.

"He's been struggling of late. There's no denying Ryan Jack is a good player when fully fit. There's an issue there.

"There is an issue with Ryan, his age as well. He was away with the Scotland squad and he hadn't trained and your mind starts to work, 'Oh has he picked up another injury to that calf again?'.

"Sometimes when you get to a certain age maybe you need to look at part-time football, I don't know.

"I don't know the extent of his injury but it's a shame. But I'm not a fan of that [pay-as-you-play], I don't think he would want that, I don't think the manager would want that either.

"I wish him all the best but I think it's the perfect time for Ryan, [John] Lundstram, and there will be a few others, to cut ties because they need a turnaround of players, new, fresh faces to come in."

Philippe Clement told to cut ties with Ryan Jack at Rangers

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement is not thought to be in favour of bringing Ryan Jack back at Rangers.

In terms of his abilities as a player alone Jack, 31, would probably have not seen his contract expire in the first place, but he is one of the most obvious examples of a chronic issue at Ibrox where players haven't been available when needed under successive managers.

The solid move to bring in Connor Barron has already heralded the start of the new era in midfield, although with Lundstram a regular last term but now in Turkey about to sign for Trabzonspor there will likely be more work to do in the middle yet.
