Rangers have produced some of the best talents in Scottish football over the years.

Rangers have counted the likes of Barry Ferguson, Ally McCoist and John Greig among their academy graduates.

However, the production line has stalled in recent years, with only Ross McCausland and Findlay Curtis emerging as genuine options for Rangers in the first-team

Liam Kelly was the only academy graduate included in the squad for Rangers' 1-1 draw with Falkirk, which saw Russell Martin lose his job.

The 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh need to invest in the academy and start bringing through stars more regularly.

Nathan Patterson is the star graduate of Rangers' academy

While others like McCoist and Greig have achieved much more success with the Govan outfit, Nathan Patterson has to be the best graduate for the Gers, just purely for the profit that they achieved.

The 23-year-old made just 27 appearances for the club, before he was shipped off to Everton in a deal worth £16m, according to Sky Sports.

That is far and away the most significant profit that the Bears have been handed for an academy product, and for one that played so few games for the team, it is a great deal.

If the Gers are to taste success again in the near future, they need to bring through more like Patterson, either to sell on, like they did with him, or to star in the senior side.

Rangers' most valuable academy products ranked

According to football website transfermarkt, as of 14 October, Patterson has the highest market value of any Gers academy graduate to have left Govan, at £14million.

Ross McCormack and Alan Hutton follow the now Premier League star, with career high valuations of £8.7m and £7.8m respectively, while Barry Ferguson is fourth with £7.4m

Of course, market value on transfermarkt does not always reflect how much a player is actually worth, so it is important to take those figures with a pinch of salt.

No current Ibrox stars make the top 10, with the values dropping significantly after Lewis Morgan, who was rated at £5.2m at one point, with a total of £76m coming from those ten players.

The Gers need to start making the most out of their academy again, if they want to catch up with arch-rivals Celtic.

The most successful Light Blues side's have always included the likes of Ferguson, McGregor and one of the most famous Govan graduates, McCoist.

There is hope that the likes of Mason Munn, Curtis and Josh Gentles can step up, but they need to be given a chance to do so.
