John Souttar 'set for new Rangers contract' after Ibrox development

Rangers will offer John Souttar a new long-term contract soon, Barry Ferguson says.

The former Gers player believes the Bears will look to secure the defender's future at Ibrox, as his current deal expires next year.

Souttar has been a key player for Philippe Clement this season, starting in most fixtures before his injury.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (3 February), Ferguson said: "[Souttar] is one that I'm sure Rangers will get tied down on a longer-term contract.

"I think he's coming up to his final year. So he's one I'm sure the club are looking to sign longer term."

The Glaswegian outfit need to sit down and offer Souttar fresh terms in the coming months to avoid speculation about his future in the summer.

In the current campaign, the 28-year-old has arguably been the Gers' best defender, and it wouldn't be surprising to see top English teams snoop around the centre-back during the prime of his career.

Clement must have surely realised the Scottish defender's importance after having to play Robin Propper and Clinton Nsiala at the back due to the Light Blues' fitness issues.

Rangers fans will be desperate to compete with Celtic once again next season after falling short recently.

The Bears are 10 points behind their Old Firm rivals and seemingly have no chance of winning the Scottish Premiership from here on out.

While the Glaswegian outfit might be desperate for funds and could sanction Souttar's sale, having him enter the final year of his contract will only reduce the potential asking price.

Handing the centre-back a new deal protects the Gers' interest and keeps one of their best players at Ibrox for the long term.
