Ian Wright has called for change in Scotland that could seek to benefit Rangers in the future.

The Arsenal legend is currently in the USA as part of the punditry team for the World Cup on STV.

He has been looking ahead as Scotland prepare to face Brazil in their final group game on Wednesday.

A clash with the five-time tournament winners could be the difference between a place in the last 32 and an early plane home.

Things haven't been made easy after a frustrating 1-0 defeat last time around against Morocco left fans annoyed by the lack of attacking intent.

That has been put down to a lack of quality within the squad and Wright has placed part of the blame for that on the SPFL's shoulders.

Ian Wright’s SPFL criticism puts renewed focus on Scottish football’s TV valuation

There has long been a need for the Scottish Premiership to take a step up to provide a landing spot for the best talent the country has to offer.

That just hasn't been the case for many years now, leading to a lack of true quality within the national team squad.

Only two of the starting XI against Morocco play for a Premiership side, while just four of the other outfield players in the squad add to that tally.

It isn't good enough and has even been picked out by Wright as he set out on a rant about the poor broadcasting deal the SPFL have agreed.

Speaking on STV on Wednesday, he said: "I feel sorry for Scotland, I feel sorry for the fans, I feel sorry for everything because I think it goes a lot deeper.

"You look at Norway, a country the same size as Scotland, six or seven thousand they're averaging on a weekly basis in attendance, Scotland are averaging 16,000.

"Norway have managed to get a broadcast deal £25million more per year than Scotland. You look at Scotland and their raw materials, you're looking at amazing attendances, talent, storylines.

"Somebody in Scotland is letting down the country on a massive scale. They've got to do more, there's got to be a bolder, braver vision for Scottish football."

Wright has been very passionate in his discussion about Scottish football and it is certainly something that Rangers and everyone else in the Premiership will agree with.

What a better TV deal could mean for Rangers and the rest of the Premiership

The Light Blues have already voiced frustration towards the gulf in TV revenue compared to elsewhere in Europe.

Then-managing director Stewart Robertson voiced his annoyance in 2022 as the SPFL were deemed to be "underselling Scottish football".

Rangers refused to give their backing to a £30m-per-year deal with Sky Sports at the time.

By comparison the latest Norwegian deal is worth around £57m, showing the gulf that Wright is talking about.

Should the SPFL reach a fee in that range it would transform Scottish Football and allow the infrastructure of many clubs to change.

For someone like Rangers it would massively increase their revenue and allow them to spend more in the transfer market consistently.

Simply put, signing better players puts them in a better chance in Europe and could allow them to become a power on the biggest of stages once again.

That would also afford them more of a chance to hand chances to young Scottish talent, whereas the risk is just too high for the Light Blues right now.

There are so many benefits to an increased television deal and it can only be a good thing to have Wright in the corner of every Scottish Premiership outfit.
