Ferguson wants Mourinho appointment at Rangers amid mega-money contract update

Barry Ferguson's hopes of landing the Rangers job on a permanent basis look incredibly slim as his audition nears its end.

Ferguson would like to stay on full-time as Rangers boss, having initially taken over from Philippe Clement until the end of the season.

With 12 games overseen, Ferguson's record reads a symmetrically pleasing four wins, four losses and four draws.

Victory over Fenerbahce was a high point, as was beating Celtic away from home in the Old Firm, but Rangers have remained as inconsistent as ever.

Mourinho tipped for Rangers appointment

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Jose Mourinho and Russell Martin have been tipped as contenders to join in the summer, with each of those generating rather mixed reaction among the fanbase.

Of each of those names - and indeed the many more mentioned - Derek Ferguson would like to see Rangers go all out for Mourinho.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Derek said Mourinho would be a good choice for Rangers if his brother Barry does not land the job, but a mega-money release clause in his Fenerbahce contract could make things difficult.

"It's a tough decision. If you want the best you've got to pay," he said. "I'd love Mourinho to come in but he has that buy-out clause and probably can't afford him.

"When he was at Ibrox for the recent European tie, I felt he was feeling the club out. It'd be a perfect challenge for Mourinho, at a club with the stature of Rangers and needing to catch a club across the city that has dominated for so long.

"He could be the man who turns that around. Money talks, so whether that can be done I don't know. If I was in charge, it'd be a no-brainer."

Mourinho would be a major appointment for 49ers

At the same time Rangers are likely looking for a new manager, they are also waiting to announce a major takeover.

The 49ers will be in position at Ibrox sooner rather than later, and appointing Mourinho really would send a huge message across to the other side of Glasgow.

However, realistically speaking, that is not likely to happen. Instead, the same names will continue to be mentioned until an appointment is eventually made.
