Philippe Clement to make massive midfield signing after Rangers offers for Joan Jordan

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers have to find a senior option in central midfield who can be a leader on the pitch like Steven Davis or Barry Ferguson, says the latter's brother Derek.

The Light Blues seemed to be closing in on a surprise move for Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean earlier this summer [Rangers Review, 1 July] but he Scot has since ruled himself out of leaving Carrow Road [Norwich Evening News, 20 July].

Multiple loan offers have since gone in at Sevilla for 30-year-old Joan Jordan [Fernando Serrano, 24 July] but he won't be the answer to help lead talented youngsters Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande after the club pulled out of the pursuit over the weekend [Rangers Review, 28 July].

But Ferguson believes it is of the utmost importance to have a midfield general in ahead of the new season.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said it was: "Oh massive. The boy Barron's come in and played in the middle of the park against Man United with Diomande.

"They're two good players but especially in that position, this is just me personally, I think you need experience.

"You think of the job that Steve Davis had done for a number of years, that lynchpin in the middle of the park.

"We need that badly. There's talk of one or two coming in but it's such an important position.

"We need leaders. We need good experienced players. There was talk about the boy Jordan from Seville maybe coming on board.

"Even mentioning my brother. There was a period of time where my brother Barry, he got other players playing.

"Sometimes if he wasn't at the top of his game he got other players playing. We need that type in at the moment."

Steven Davis retired at Rangers last season.

Rangers need new Barry Ferguson or Steven Davis

John Lundstram and Ryan Jack certainly have their detractors but with both senior midfielders leaving the club as their contracts expired this summer the options left behind are all young.

Diomande is 22, Barron 21, Nico Raskin still just 23, and even if Dujon Sterling doesn't replace James Tavernier at right-back and ends up in the centre of the park he is only 24.

Jordan appeared the prime candidate at this stage after the McLean deal has fallen through but the Spaniard appears to want to stay in Spain, and time is running out before the season is well under way.
