Rangers: Kevin Thomson reacts to £8m Nasser Djiga buy option claim at Ibrox

Rangers could potentially sign Nasser Djiga permanently for £8million in the upcoming transfer window.

Kevin Thomson has heard that the Gers have a buy clause for the Burkina Faso defender, who was signed on loan from Wolves last summer.

The former Scotland international feels the possible price tag to sign the centre-back is expensive despite his impressive performances in recent weeks.

Djiga and Emmanuel Fernandez have formed a brilliant partnership at Ibrox, but it remains to be seen whether Danny Rohl can continue with them at the Glaswegian outfit next season.

John Souttar has stayed on the bench in the last two William Hill Premiership matches for the Gers, with Rohl preferring a different centre-back pairing.

Djiga and Fernandez seem to be the German manager's first-choice options at the back as the Light Blues push for the league title in the final stretch of the campaign.

If the Burkinabe defender does end up playing a pivotal role in taking the Glaswegian outfit to the top of the table, fans in G51 will surely want him to stay.

Speaking on The Breakdown on 23 March, Thomson said, "Am I right in saying somebody said that the buy clause for Djiga is £8m? That's a lot of money for a centre-back in Scotland."

Djiga's start to life at the Govan side wasn't enviable, with supporters frustrated with his inconsistent displays.

The 23-year-old seems to have turned a page on his time in G51 and can now surely be one of the reasons for their resurgence in the William Hill Premiership.

Rangers could lose Fernandez in the summer, with several top teams keeping an eye on him.

Along with Djiga, Derek Cornelius is also set to return to his parent club once his loan spell at the Gers expires.

Dujon Sterling can play as a centre-back, but his fitness issues make him unreliable, leaving Rohl with a lack of options in defence for the 2026-27 season.

Keeping Djiga and Fernandez would be sensible for the Glaswegian outfit, but they may need to significantly reinforce that area in the coming months.
