Lawrence Shankland: What Rangers’ new signing has said in first interview after Ibrox move confirmed

Lawrence Shankland has revealed that signing for Rangers is a “dream”, as he gives his first interview since his move from Hearts was confirmed.

Rangers have started their summer recruitment drive with a bang, snapping up the signature of star striker Shankland from Hearts.

The 30-year-old will officially become a Gers player when the transfer window opens on 15 June, joining on undisclosed terms and bringing to an end a fabulous four years at Tynecastle.

Fresh off the back of scoring 16 goals in 29 Scottish Premiership games for Hearts last term, Danny Rohl has landed a huge signing to bolster his team’s cutting edge.

And, speaking in his first interview following confirmation of his Rangers transfer, Shankland has made it clear that he pushed for the move to Ibrox.

What has Lawrence Shankland said in first Rangers interview?

Shankland’s signing shows serious intent from the 49ers, who know they will need to back Rohl in the market this summer after backing him to remain as Rangers manager.

This is certainly a fantastic way to start their summer business, as the ex-Hearts centre-forward has proven himself to be an elite marksman at Scottish Premiership level.

Speaking to Rangers TV in his first interview with the Club, the boyhood Gers fan is clearly delighted to be moving to Govan, and has explained why he felt the time was right to make the switch.

“I am delighted to be here and to have this opportunity. Rangers is my boyhood club, and it has always been a dream to play here, so I was really keen to get it done,” Shankland said.

“A lot of hard graft has gone in to get to this point, and I’m just really happy.

“The club are in a position where they want to get back to winning silverware more regularly, and I want to be a big part of that, so that’s what I have come here to do.”

Rohl should be thrilled and nervous about Shankland signing

Well, the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh definitely look ready to back Rohl as heavily as possible this summer if the Shankland signing is anything to go by.

The way 2025-26 ended was hugely concerning for everyone connected with Gers, and it especially brought a significant amount of heat down on the German coach.

But, being able to now field a strike partnership of Shankland and Youssef Chermiti, as well as having the likes of Bojan Miovski and Ryan Naderi in the strike department too: that’s some serious goalscoring firepower.

As a result, Rohl should and will be over the moon to get Shankland through the door, but he also should acknowledge what this sort of statement signing means for him at Ibrox: there’s no more excuses.

“We are delighted to have Lawrence join Rangers. He is a player with proven quality, leadership and work ethic, and his goalscoring record in Scotland speaks for itself,” Rohl told Rangers TV of his new recruit.

“He understands the demands and expectations that come with playing for Rangers, and we believe his character and experience will be a huge asset for the group.

“I wish him well at the World Cup this summer, and look forward to welcoming him back to Glasgow during pre-season.”
