Rangers: Steven Gerrard will be next manager as Danny Rohl sack imminent

Rangers will appoint Steven Gerrard to replace Danny Rohl in the summer after losing to Celtic on Sunday.

That’s what Tam McManus believes, with the Hibernian ace hearing things in the background about the Liverpool icon’s potential return to the Gers.

The Light Blues suffered their third straight defeat in the William Hill Premiership after losing 3-1 to Celtic at Parkhead on 10 May, leaving the German manager under pressure.

Gerrard’s name has been floated around at Ibrox since last summer and McManus thinks the Englishman will finally be back in the Govan side’s dugout sooner rather than later.

Rohl’s sacking is considered imminent after losing to Celtic, and while the 37-year-old head coach will argue he deserves time in G51, supporters are beginning to turn on him.

Steven Gerrard return to Rangers on cards

Speaking on PLZ Soccer on 11 May, McManus said, “I think Gerrard will be the next manager of Rangers. I think in the summer. I think [Rohl] will be gone. It’s not just now. It’s what I’ve been hearing in the last couple of months in the background.”

Gerrard was the last manager to lift the league title with the Gers and his return was being backed by a large section of supporters before Russell Martin’s appointment.

After the former Southampton boss’ abysmal tenure at Ibrox ended, the Englishman’s name was back in contention to lead the Light Blues, but Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises ultimately brought in Rohl.

The 37-year-old head coach’s lack of experience was initially used against him, but he was able to bring stability to the Glaswegian outfit.

With back-to-back losses to Motherwell, Hearts and Celtic ending the Govan side’s title hopes, Rohl’s credentials have taken a hit, which may lead to his imminent departure.

Danny Rohl has questions to answer after Ibrox calamity

Going into the warm-weather training camp in the middle of April, Rangers had the title within their hands.

The Gers had all the momentum on their side going into the post-split fixtures and had they won every single game, number 56 would have been theirs.

Instead, the trip to Spain seems to have had a negative effect and whatever Rohl worked on in La Manga only made his team worse.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has been outmanoeuvred by opposition managers in big games, thus leaving him in a difficult position towards the end of the season.
