Danny Rohl could be two games from Rangers sack as ‘worrying’ comments called out

Danny Rohl could be out of a job at Rangers should his side fall to defeat against Hearts or Celtic.

That is the view of journalist Gary Keown, who believes the ruthless nature of the game could lead to Rangers chiefs wanting to go a different direction if they fall short this term.

The 2025-26 Scottish Premiership title race is like no other, with Hearts, Celtic and Rangers locked in a three-way tussle that has gone the distance.

However, Rangers could find themselves out of that race should they lose to Hearts and fall seven points adrift on Monday.

Even if Rangers do beat Hearts, they then have an equally-as-big-game away at Celtic the following week, in what is a defining six-day period for Rohl.

Danny Rohl needs to face reality of defeat to Hearts

If Rangers do miss out on the title, it will not be because of Rohl.

The German was hired in October with the Gers in one massive mess thanks to the dreadful tenure of Russell Martin.

A long unbeaten run ensured Rangers were back in the mix out of nowhere, but results have not been consistent enough.

After a large outlay on transfers in the winter window, many had Rangers as favourites to finish first heading into the post-split fixtures.

A 3-2 loss to Motherwell at Ibrox last weekend put paid to that, with the Gers now likely needing six points from six against Hearts and Celtic.

In the view of journalist Keown, writing for the Scottish Daily Mail, Rohl’s job could even be on the line right now.

“Football is a results game. Not a tea dance,” he wrote. “It’s totally, utterly ruthless.

“And if Rohl loses to Hearts tomorrow to slide seven points behind them with three games to go, or blows it totally at Parkhead in seven days’ time, it’s got to be curtains.”

Keown also pointed out that certain comments made by Rohl regarding his tenure are rather “worrying”.

He pointed out how Rohl seems to be “harping on” about how much of a mess Rangers were upon his appointment more than anyone else.

While Keown may be a tad harsh in his assessment, there is some truth in the fact that finishing anything lower than top spot would be disappointing after the Gers dragged themselves back into contention.

Rangers finishing top could bring in instant £40m windfall

It is pointed out in the same article – as it has been elsewhere – that Rangers would go straight into the group stage of the Champions League if they finish as Scottish champions.

That is based on current coefficient, which has been helped by various external factors.

Reaching that stage of UEFA’s showpiece competition is worth an instant £40million, which is no small change.

It means not only would the Gers pick up a rare title in the current day, they would be able to push on an build a possible dynasty.

You would hope that would be under the talented Rohl, but the margins are extremely fine and we all know just how quickly football can change.
