Tochi Chukwuani not solution to Rangers headache as Danny Rohl needs new transfer
Tochi Chukwuani was hooked off at half-time as Motherwell dominated Rangers in the William Hill Premiership on Sunday.
Mohamed Diomande replaced the Denmark Under-21 international at the break after Danny Rohl saw his team go two goals down in the opening 45 minutes at Ibrox on 26 April.
It seemed difficult for the Sturm Graz star to cope with the Steemen’s midfield, who were able to bypass the Light Blues easily to break on the counter on several occasions.
It’s clear that the Gers need someone capable of sitting deep and helping out the backline, something Nicolas Raskin and the 23-year-old Dane evidently aren’t the best at.
Rohl relied on Chukwuani when Connor Barron was sidelined and has continued to favour the winter signing, but he may need to rethink things for the upcoming matches.
🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨
The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
Danny Rohl has major transfer priority at Rangers
With Raskin linked with a move away from Ibrox after some impressive performances for club and country, the Gers will surely need to find a replacement for him soon.
Chukwuani has made 11 William Hill Premiership appearances, with his Sofascore heatmap showing he most often occupies the left side of midfield.
| Statistics | Tochi Chukwuani |
| Appearances | 11 |
| Goals | 2 |
| Assists | 0 |
| Accurate passes per game | 29.3 (83%) |
| Successful dribbles per game | 0.5 (60%) |
| Total duels won per game | 5.2 (54%) |
The Danish midfielder mostly played on the left for Sturm Graz rather than as a number six and may be better suited to replace what Raskin brings to the team — the box-to-box tenacity and goalscoring contributions from the middle of the park.
Chukwuani has scored two league goals for the Glaswegian outfit, taking 0.7 shots per game, missing two big chances and recording a goal conversion of 25 per cent.
Defensively, the midfielder has made one error leading to a shot and one error leading to a goal, showcasing some of his frailties going back.
Motherwell exploit Ibrox reluctance
Rangers fans weren’t impressed by the lack of determination from the likes of Raskin and Chukwuani to track back effectively when Motherwell were on the break.
It looked easy for Jens Berthel Askou’s team to bypass the Gers’ engine room, with the Denmark youth international making two defensive contributions, losing two of his four ground duels and committing one foul in the opening 45 minutes.
It may have been better for Rohl to start Barron in the heart of the midfield to try and disrupt Motherwell’s attacks.
The German manager will surely take lessons from the 3-2 loss to the Steelemen and one of them may be the need to sign a new player to bolster the middle of the park in the summer.
