Jayden Meghoma failed to take Rangers chance as Tuur Rommens injury boost around the corner

Jayden Meghoma did not make the most of his opportunity for Rangers with Tuur Rommens sidelined.

The English fullback has been filling in on the wide left of defence in the absence of the Belgian.

The 19-year-old has started the last three games for the Gers, and if the goal was to remain at Ibrox next season, he may be a long way off.

Meghoma is currently on loan from Brentford, with the move to Glasgow designed to provide him more game time.

Most recently, in Rangers’ loss to Motherwell, Meghoma was particularly poor, and it continued a stretch of three far from impressive starts.

How Jayden Meghoma failed to take Rangers chance

Rangers’ title credentials were dented in their defeat to Motherwell, with Danny Rohl forced to make some halftime decisions.

Unfortunately, for Meghoma, he was one of the players taken off at the break.

Against Motherwell, Rangers were struggling to get much joy, which made it no surprise when Meghoma was subbed off at half-time.

In his place, James Tavernier emerged with Dujon Sterling shipped over to the left.

In truth, the 19-year-old Brentford loanee did not offer much going forward and made just one pass into the final third.

Additionally, he had a zero per cent success rate from his attempted crosses as per Sofascore.

Whether it was to do with instructions from manager Rohl or the player lacking confidence, Meghoma rarely ventured much further than the halfway line.

Overall, the Gers needed the loanee to be brave in attack, but instead they got a player who looked afraid to leave spaces behind him.

The halftime substitution was ultimately a fair decision, and with Rommens returning from injury soon, it may have been Meghoma’s final start at Ibrox.

How has Meghoma’s loan been for Rangers?

Meghoma has not been a terrible loan move for the Gers, with the 19-year-old doing OK despite his lack of experience.

However, unlike Mikey Moore and Nasser Djiga, it has not been a spell where the G51 outfit will be desperate to bring him back to Glasgow.

Compared to Rommens, Meghoma is a completely different style of fullback, and Rohl may look to bring in a better backup who can slot in seamlessly in the event of injury.

Rohl seems to like high-flying attacking wide defenders, and Meghoma is not exactly that profile.

Overall, the Gers look to be needing quite the defensive shakeup next season with Meghoma, Tavernier and Djiga all expected to depart.
