Rangers Women suffer title blow as Leanne Crichton hits out after Hearts loss – ‘So poor’

Leanne Crichton admitted Rangers Women were “so poor” at both ends of the pitch in their damaging 2-1 loss to Hearts.

Rangers had 21 shots to Hearts’ six, 62 per cent possession, 12 corners to the visitors’ zero, and five shots on target to two but came away with nothing at Broadwood Stadium.

After dominating the first half, Rangers received a sucker punch through a Jodi McLeary own goal just before the break.

Against the run of play, Hearts made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute through Carly Johns’ strike. Calliste Brookshire’s deflected stoppage-time effort set up a nervy finish but Eva Olid’s side held on.

Rangers are now four points behind Hearts, with Glasgow City now leapfrogging them into second with four games to go of the Championship Rounds.

‘Story of Rangers’ season’

Rangers came into this game off the back of important wins over Glasgow City, Partick Thistle and Celtic, but had a disappointing afternoon on Friday.

They have now lost three times to Hearts this season but there is still time to turn their fortunes around in the coming weeks.

And after the match, Crichton could not contain her disappointment.

She told Rangers TV: “It’s frustrating. I don’t think I’ve seen a performance this season where we’ve been so dominant but so poor at both ends of the pitch.

“We make individual mistakes across the pitch, we don’t recover our shape well enough.

“It’s been the story of our season. Too many moments like this that we’ve come away frustrated at ourselves but just not good enough.”

Rangers need to bounce back quickly on Wednesday at home to Hibernian, before taking on Montrose in the Scottish Cup semi-finals on 3 May.

Rangers face mountain to climb

If Rangers want to finish top of the pile at the end of the season, they will likely need to be faultless for the rest of the campaign.

But it is out of their hands as Glasgow and Hearts are two and four points ahead of them respectively.

The momentum Rangers gained from thrashing Celtic before the April international break has seeped away after this Hearts setback, plus, they have a difficult run of games to come.

In addition to hosting Celtic, they travel to Glasgow on the final day of the season.
