Rangers have surprise new hero in Tuur Rommens as defender can lead title charge

Rangers could rely on Tuur Rommens being one of their leaders to win the William Hill Premiership title this season.

Andy Halliday feels it’s a bit mad to think that the left-back, who signed for the Gers in the winter transfer window, has become an influential part of their success under Danny Rohl.

The Motherwell ace has been surprised by the impact the former Westerlo defender has had at Ibrox, quickly becoming a fan favourite.

In just six league appearances, the Belgium Under-21 international has proved to be a difference maker and may be one of the heroes in the Govan side’s push for silverware.

Rommens has become Rohl’s first choice at the Glaswegian outfit immediately as the German manager looks to pull off what was once seen as impossible in the Scottish top flight.

Tuur Rommens brings balance at Rangers

Jayden Meghoma did well as the Gers’ only natural left-back for half a campaign, but Rommens has clearly improved the team.

In his five William Hill Premiership starts, the 23-year-old has scored one goal, provided one assist and created four big opportunities, as per Sofascore.

Looking at the left-back’s heat map, it’s clear that he enjoys contributing in the final third, but that doesn’t mean he forgets his defensive responsibilities.

Rommens has averaged 1.5 interceptions, 1.3 tackles, 2.5 clearances and recovered the ball 2.5 times per game in the league this season.

The Belgian star has also won 4.8 total duels per game, winning 71 per cent of his aerial duels so far for the Glaswegian outfit.

Speaking on Open Goal on 21 April, Halliday said, “It seems a bit mad to say that a left-back is so big considering he only just came in January. But what you’ve seen over the handful of games he has played, he’s always in the box. I don’t have the stats to back it up, but it feels like he has created more chances than anybody else on the pitch when he has played. Underlaps, overlaps, I think he has made a massive difference since coming.”

Danny Rohl will hope for transfer repeat after James Tavernier exit

James Tavernier has announced he’ll leave Rangers at the end of the season, ending a glorious 11-year career at Ibrox.

The Gers’ recruitment department are now tasked with the difficult job of finding the right-back’s successor.

Dujon Sterling isn’t a reliable option as he’s injury-prone, while Max Aarons has failed to live up to expectations at the Light Blues on loan from Bournemouth.

The recruitment team in G51 need to work their magic again and find someone similar to Rommens’ quality to reinforce the right side of the Glaswegian outfit’s defence in the summer.
