Simon Jordan details Stephen Robinson risk amid Rangers manager update

Rangers are facing even more scrutiny in their search for their next manager.

With one win from their first seven games, Rangers are in absolute turmoil, and it demonstrates just how crucial their next managerial appointment is going to be.

Russell Martin faced the sack at Ibrox, arguably weeks later than he should have, with several names already linked with the vacancy in Glasgow.

One of those mooted for the job is St Mirren’s Stephen Robinson, though Simon Jordan has warned the Light Blues of the potential consequences behind that hire.

Rangers job comes with extreme pressure

Being an improvement on Martin will be an easy task, though that will be nowhere near enough for the next manager to be deemed a success at Ibrox.

Instead, the Gers need someone to reinstall the identity at Ibrox and get Rangers back to the summit of Scottish football, where they have been absent since Steven Gerrard‘s departure in 2022.

Gerrard himself has been linked with a return to Rangers, though Jim White mooted the appointment of Robinson live on talkSPORT when discussing the managerial situation in Glasgow, and Jordan immediately hit back at his claims.

Jordan said: “With due respect to the scale of St Mirren and Rangers, you’re taking a very big punt. I understand why you’d be thinking along those lines if you were thinking along those lines.

“But you’re taking somebody that’s got a shirt that’s moderately light in comparison to one that’s very heavy at Rangers, that’s got a new ownership model in there, that feels like it’s the blind leading the deaf.

“There’s too much risk there for me. I think that Rangers are not in good nick right now, and you need someone who’s got the scale of understanding what a big club feels like and looks like, and the gravitas and presence that concentrates on the mind of these players clearly in a better way than Russell did.”

Steven Gerrard fits perfectly for Simon Jordan’s description

With the direction that Rangers are going in, when compared to the direction they should be going in, it’s hard to make a case against the appointment of Gerrard.

Jordan alludes to the need for the next manager to have that experience at a big club and know how to thrive in a pressured environment, and Gerrard showcased that throughout his time at Ibrox.

The former Gers title-winner installed a winning mentality at Rangers that has been absent since his departure, and while Robinson has done and is doing a fine job with St Mirren, it is remarkably difficult to see him stepping up a level at Glasgow.

Rangers need to get this appointment spot on after several failed ones, and as Jordan says, it would be too much of a risk to experiment at this stage.
