Andrew Cavenagh can't let Russell Martin continue to fail at Rangers after losing to Sturm Graz on Thursday.

Jurgen Saumel got the better of Martin at Merkur-Arena on 2 October, leading to further pressure on the Scottish manager at the Gers.

The 39-year-old head coach is certainly going down the inevitable road of getting sacked at the Light Blues if things don't turn around.

Cavenagh has backed Martin for several weeks now at Ibrox despite fans wanting to see the back of the former Southampton boss in G51, but the American owners may have to reckon with reality once and for all.

Andrew Cavenagh to sack Russell Martin as fans boycott Rangers game

Cavenagh may be worried about the empty seats in the stadium as he continues to stick by Martin, Derek Ferguson says.

The Gers icon believes the American owner must recognise the revenue being lost as fans decide to boycott games at Ibrox, with an example seen against Genk.

While the Scottish manager seems to have a good relationship with the Glaswegian outfit's chairman for now, there's no guarantee it will remain that way.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: "Martin spoke recently about his relationship with Cavenagh being a good one. Cavenagh wanted to visit the training ground and see the players. There's nothing to suggest the relationship between them isn't good.

"Martin looked comfortable when talking about it. But when Cavenagh saw in person what was happening against Genk, and with 12,000 fans not turning up, you do wonder."

Ferguson added: "European nights are magical at Ibrox, but that was anything but. It was unbelievable how downbeat it was — I couldn't believe it. Cavenagh has to take that into account and look at the lack of tickets sold. Rangers always sell out European games, but Ibrox was anything but bouncing against Genk."

Russell Martin out of his depth at Ibrox

Martin deployed a high line against Sturm Graz, leading to the second goal in the 2-1 loss in embarrassing fashion.

The Scottish manager's style of play has been disastrous for the Gers as they've conceded 22 goals under him.

Martin's record at the Gers

It doesn't seem like the former Southampton boss has learnt from his mistakes at the Glaswegian outfit, which should be grounds for a change in the dugout.

Rangers need a replacement for Martin soon, and Cavenagh can't keep letting the Scottish manager get away with consistently poor displays any longer.
