Russell Martin has not been afraid to splash the cash so far this summer at Rangers.

The Gers have brought in 10 new signings to date, with business at Ibrox not expected to stop anytime soon.

However, this has not increased performances on the pitch so far, as Rangers only just overcame Alloa Athletic 4-2 on Saturday.

Nevertheless, Martin is still seeking further additions going into the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

Russell Martin: Jayden Meghoma is extremely talented

With Jefte set to leave Ibrox to join Palmerias for £6million in the coming days, Martin is in need of a new full-back.

Now, according to the Daily Mail on 16 August, Rangers are set to sign Meghoma on loan, with the 19-year-old previously playing under the Scotsman at Southampton.

Now at Brentford, the Bees are looking to give the Englishman more first-team experience.

  • Meghoma was signed by Brentford from Southampton for £10million last summer
  • In the latter half of the 2024/25 campaign, the full-back was loaned to Preston and made 14 appearances in all competitions

During his time at Southampton, Martin was full of praise for Meghoma after their 3-0 victory over Watford in the FA Cup, with the manager discussing the youngster’s performance with midfielder Jake Livermore.

According to Alfie House via X on 7 February 2024, the Scotsman said: “I just had a chat with Jake Livermore about how talented a player Jayden Meghoma is. He is mature, calm and intelligent. He is really developing the defensive side of his game.”

Meghoma is not good enough for Rangers

Considering that Meghoma is set to replace Jefte, the full-back is simply not good enough.

His stats from last season were poor, and he was part of a Preston team that almost got relegated from the Championship.

Meghoma may end up being a solid back-up at the Gers, but the 19-year-old should not be a regular starter.

Rangers have already had problems with their backline this season, and adding a youngster with only 22 first-team appearances to his name will not fix this issue.

If Martin wants to relieve pressure at Ibrox, he would be wise to move on to other targets.
