Coady given Ferguson seal of approval for Rangers transfer after latest Ibrox news

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers have been enjoying a spending spree this summer, having recruited seven new stars so far.

The recruitment drive doesn't appear to be over either, as several more names have been linked with a move to Ibrox in the coming days.

Conor Coady is one of these. The Leicester City defender is believed to be keen on a move to Glasgow, and a transfer could be completed within the coming days.

Coady would be smart signing for Rangers

Former Rangers star Derek Ferguson believes Coady could prove to be a vital cog in the Rangers machine next season.

In an exclusive interview with Ibrox News, he explained why it would be so important for Gers to complete this transfer.

He said: "He's a leader and looks fit still, despite his age. It's an absolute no-brainer. They've brought in some younger defenders who look more like project players, so you need leaders alongside them.

"It's why James Tavernier will also have a part to play this season. Rangers have to get the mix right and Coady would be a brilliant signing alongside some of these others."

Emmanuel Fernandez, Max Aarons and Nasser Djiga are among the defenders signed this summer. The latter of the trio were brought in on loan.

Panathinaikos tie will be the first test of Rangers' transfer business

Russell Martin is in somewhat of a unique situation in that his first competitive game as manager could prove to be one of the most important of the season.

Rangers face Panathinaikos in a two-legged Champions League qualifying match, with the first leg taking place on 22 July.

It's the first of three ties that Rangers will need to navigate to qualify for the Champions League group stage. If they don't win all three ties, they could still potentially end up in the Europa League or the Conference League.

Rangers' main goal might be to topple Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, but these European ties will have motivated Martin to get his transfer business done quickly. He'll be hoping to have sealed a deal for Coady before Panathinaikos visit Ibrox.
