Ferguson expects Rangers to terminate player's contract after 'horrible news'

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers' squad is becoming noticeably large as Russell Martin continues his spending spree.

The Ibrox club have recruited six new stars in this transfer window - soon to be seven in Djeidi Gassama - with more signings to come imminently.

It means some existing squad members will find it hard to get game time and may be motivated to seek a transfer elsewhere.

Rangers ace Matondo sustained fresh injury setback

Rabbi Matondo is one example of a Rangers player who has been on the fringes of the team when not out on loan.

The Welsh international has barely played for the Glasgow side due to his fitness issues.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson suggested there's scope for Rangers to terminate Matondo's contract in a move that would likely suit both parties.

Ferguson said: "Fans need to understand that no player wants to be injured. It's so unfortunate. He's obviously got issues that he can't shake.

"There needs to be a common denominator between the player and the club. Matondo needs to be honest because when you're on X amount of money and you've cost a fee, there needs to be an honest with regards to what you've contributed.

"I think they'll now work towards an agreement and I think, with the help of the agents, they can get there.

"It's horrible news for Matondo - and he's not alone at Rangers - but hopefully he can work out a deal, work hard to get fit and maybe find a club where he can find his spark. But both Matondo and Rangers certainly need to be talking about it."

Rangers sales are inevitable as Martin continues to build his squad

Martin has been questioned about the size of his squad and he has admitted that player sales are inevitable.

He's likely already had conversations with players deemed surplus to requirements.

However, it's not always easy to get these players out the door for a reasonable fee. There are a few fringe players at Rangers on big money who might not be able to command similar wages elsewhere. Sadly, Matondo could be in that category. It might be hard to find a club to take a gamble on him.

Rangers' recruitment team will have to do whatever they can to get these dispensable players out the door.

There's already talk of Rangers selling one of their star players for a huge fee to raise more funds for transfers. If they can successfully offload a handful of fringe players, selling a talented first-team star might not be necessary.
