McCoist reacts to Steven Gerrard return latest at Rangers
Rangers remain on the hunt for their next permanent manager while Barry Ferguson remains at Ibrox as interim.
Ferguson missed a key opportunity to boost his credentials of becoming Phillipe Clement’s successor permanently, as the Ibrox side failed to beat bitter rivals Celtic on Sunday.
Rangers took the lead against Brendan Rodgers’ side through Cyriel Dessers, but Adam Idah’s equaliser ensured that the Old Firm derby finished 1-1.
Former Light Blues hero Steven Gerrard, who steered the Gers to Scottish Premiership glory in 2021, has been linked with the vacancy.

McCoist speaks out on Ferguson’s Rangers future amid Gerrard links
Ferguson has just three Scottish Premiership games left to take charge of in his interim spell at Ibrox.
Speaking live on talkSPORT (5 May, 7.58am), Ally McCoist was asked what he makes of the managerial situation at Ibrox.
McCoist said: “I don’t think Derek Ferguson will get [the permanent job]. to be brutally honest with you. I think he’s come in and done absolutely fine.
“He’s got a bit of pride back and certainly the level of performance, I think, has improved. They look as though they’re playing for him.
“However, I just think that the new owners, when they come in, will want their own man.”
| Opponent | Result |
| Athletic Bilbao (A) | 2-0 L |
| St Mirren (A) | 2-2 D |
| Celtic (H) | 1-1 D |
When then asked about Gerrard’s potential return, McCoist said: “Well, they’re talking about it. There’s a few names getting banded about.”
Gerrard return could go either way for Rangers
The 49ers Enterprisers will be eager to make the correct managerial appointment once they complete their takeover of the Ibrox giants.
Rangers supporters will be anxious to see the Light Blues close the gap between themselves and Celtic, and compete for silverware once more next term.
To enjoy a successful campaign next season, the Bears must make the right call when it comes to selecting their next manager.
Gerrard should always command respect at Ibrox for the stellar job he did last time he was in charge of the Scottish Premiership giants, as his side beat rivals Celtic to the title in 2021.
However, since leaving the Gers in favour of Aston Villa, the Liverpudlian’s managerial career has taken a significant turn for the worse, so a Rangers return could go either way.
He was sacked by Villa in October 2022, before joining Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq in the summer of 2023, but he was then dismissed by the Saudi Arabian club in January.
