Ferguson baffled by Dessers as multiple major clubs eye Rangers striker

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Cyriel Dessers continues to divide opinion among the Rangers fanbase, despite his more-than-healthy goals return this season.

The Nigeria international may have gone back-to-back games without a goal for Rangers, but he still has 22 for the campaign.

Dessers produced a superb showing in Rangers' 3-1 Europa League win at Fenerbahce two weeks ago, with that arguably his best all-round display since arriving at Ibrox.

In the view of many, though, the 30-year-old still misses too many chances and does not have the clinical edge to lead the line for the Gers.

Derek Ferguson makes Dessers transfer claim

Dessers is no stranger to being linked with a move away from Rangers, with every top team in Turkey potentially keeping tabs on him after what he did against Fenerbahce.

In the view of former Rangers player turned pundit Ferguson - the brother of caretaker manager Barry - Dessers will not be short of suitors this summer.

And Ferguson believes the manner in which Dessers blows hot and cold continues to baffle him on the basis of his recent European exploits.

"In the game against Fenerbahce, he was everything you want from a centre-forward," Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News. "He was physical, running the channels, holding the ball up, a threat in front of goal.

"I just can't believe how he performs at such a high level, and then another day he looks out of sorts. If I'd never seen Dessers until last week, I'd have been thinking, what a top, top player.

"I don't get him, I'll be honest. But what comes across from his interviews is that he's a lovely guy and he says he wants to stay at Rangers. I'm not so sure they'll be able to keep hold of him at this rate.

"A lot of top clubs across Europe will be looking at his record, which is fantastic. It's easy to scrutinise his all-round play, but in recent weeks he's been top drawer."

Dessers' goals record for Rangers this season

Rangers strikers will be judged by their goals in the Scottish Premiership first and foremost, and Dessers has 11 of those in 27 appearances this season.

Granted, that is not the best of returns on the face of it, although 10 of those appearances have come via the substitutes' bench.

It is also worth noting that Dessers is not on penalty duties, which would help to further inflate that figure.

However, 22 goals overall is a good return with two months of the season still to play, especially when factoring in his four assists in the Europa League and Scottish Premiership.

That will not be enough to win over every Rangers supporter, but Dessers is certainly proving some of his critics wrong.
