Rangers should not think twice about singing Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron on a free transfer, Barry Ferguson says.

The former Gers captain would take the youngster in a "heartbeat" at Ibrox amid interest from the Light Blues.

Ferguson has urged the Glaswegian outfit to take the opportunity and sign the 22-year-old with a pre-contract agreement.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (17 January), the 46-year-old said: "I would take him in a heartbeat. I think he's good enough. Whether he starts week in, week out, that's up to the young man to show his worth and prove he's good enough.

"What I've seen of Cameron, he's got the ability and it looks to me he's the type of character willing to work hard. And these are the guys you can't let go. You've got to go and take an opportunity. It's a free transfer as well."

Rangers to strengthen with Lyall Cameron transfer

Nils Koppen will examine the success of the Connor Barron deal and, evidently, push to sign Cameron for free in the coming months.

While the former Aberdeen midfielder has struggled for game time in recent weeks, the Scotsman has shown massive potential.

Cameron would be another highly-regarded prospect in the Gers' ranks if they can get a deal over the line.

Rangers have impressive depth in their engine room, with Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande forming a fantastic partnership.

Philippe Clement has relied upon the Belgian and Ivorian stars in what has been a revamped Bears starting lineup in the second half of the season.

With the emergence of Hamza Igamane, the future looks bright at Ibrox, and Cameron's addition would only give the Light Blues another quality youngster.

While the Glaswegian outfit must aspire to return to the top, they should also look at developing future stars and sell them for a profit.

Dundee will seemingly be entitled to compensation if the Gers sign the 22-year-old, but it would still likely be deemed a bargain.
