Rangers £5m transfer claim emerges amid recent development

David Edgar has pointed out the problem at Rangers as the tribunal made its decision on Connor Barron on 31 December.

The Heart and Hand podcast host believes that signing players like Barron on a free transfer is not the problem but the ones who are signed for fees up to £5million are what is worrying.

He wrote on X: “No chance. The problem isn’t guys like Barron, every team needs those. It’s the 3-5m signings we keep getting who don’t deliver.”

Rangers have to sort out their transfer mess

Edgar is absolutely spot on, particularly in light of the tribunal’s decision regarding Barron.

Gers have indeed faced challenges with their high-value signings, where players acquired for fees in the £3-5million range have often failed to deliver the expected impact on the pitch.

This pattern of spending big on underperforming talent has been a significant financial drain and has not helped in closing the competitive gap with Celtic.

While signing talents like Barron on a free transfer or for a relatively modest fee like £600,000 is a smart move, providing value and potential without breaking the bank, the real issue lies in the costly mistakes with higher-profile acquisitions.

These expensive signings, when they don’t perform, not only waste resources but also hinder squad development and financial flexibility, making it harder for the club to invest in areas that could genuinely improve their standing against Celtic.
