Fraser Thornton role detailed after Dave King reveal at Rangers
Fraser Thornton will be a figurehead after being appointed the new Rangers chairman, Chris Jack says.
The Rangers Review journalist has revealed that Thornton won’t be part of the day-to-day tasks at Ibrox, unlike Dave King and John Bennett.
Patrick Stewart, who was recently appointed the chief executive officer, and his team will be the primary decision-makers at the Glaswegian outfit.
Speaking on The Rangers Review (1 January), Jack Said: “Fraser Thornton has been appointed as chairman. He’ll be quite a low-key chairman. It’s not going to be a Dave King and John Bennett-style chairmanship. He’s very much a figurehead.
“He’s not going to be a main day-to-day presence in and around Ibrox. He’s not going to be the main day-to-day decision-maker. That’s for Patrick Stewart, and that’s for his team.”
Rangers need stability after Fraser Thornton and Patrick Stewart arrival at Ibrox
The Gers had been in turmoil over the last few months after the departures of John Bennett and James Bisgrove.
John Gilligan held his own as the interim chairman but didn’t have a stable team around him.
The Light Blues’ lack of leadership in the boardroom certainly reflected on the pitch over the last few months.
Stewart and Thornton’s arrival will hopefully steer the Rangers ship to better shores after a difficult period for the Ibrox faithful.
Philippe Clement has the team 14 points behind Celtic in the league table, and the Bears finally have people in the hierarchy who seemingly won’t hesitate to fire the manager.
The Belgian is lucky to still be in a job at the Glaswegian outfit, but failing to win any of his first seven Old Firm derbies will likely be his downfall.
Celtic are set to visit Ibrox on 2 January in the Scottish Premiership, and after the results against St Mirren and Motherwell, the 50-year-old head coach is under increasing pressure.
It seems like Thornton isn’t going to have the final say on Clement if and when he’s sacked.
