Rangers could sign up to six new players in January with talks planned
Rangers may hold talks over a possible six new players in the upcoming January transfer window, Chris Jack says.
The Rangers Review journalist believes Philippe Clement needs depth across his squad, with three new defenders, a midfielder as well as a winger and striker all mooted.
Ahead of the window, NK Osijek midfielder Marko Soldo has already appeared as a possible target at Ibrox [Rangers News, 10 December].
Speaking on The Rangers Review [11 December], Jack said: “I think you will see Rangers do business in January. They need to bring in a defender who can play both sides at centre-back and potential right-back cover, left-back as well.
“There will be talk about strikers, I’m sure. There will be talk about wide players depending on how well Matondo and Cortes come back after their respective injuries. You look at that midfield, there’s not a lot of strength in depth there.”
Rangers could seal six new transfers in January?
The Gers have a relatively weak squad after several sales in the summer, and some recent additions haven’t performed up to the mark either.
Clement has struggled to get the best out of his squad up until the last month, with the Light Blues 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.
Nils Koppen has been promoted to technical director, although the development seems unnecessary considering his lack of experience in the role.
Rangers may consider another new centre-back after summer signing Robin Propper has struggled to get to grips with Scottish football.
John Souttar and Leon Balogun have formed a decent partnership in recent weeks, but the Gers could do with another central defender, potentially one who is younger and can be moulded.
Clement’s future in the Ibrox dugout will likely influence the Light Blues’ transfer plans for the coming months, and if the Belgian manager is sacked, it will be interesting to see how the hierarchy approaches their recruitment plans in January.
In other Rangers news, Andy Halliday expects the Ibrox faithful to be fuming at a potential Clement decision.
