Derek Ferguson has lauded Rangers defender James Tavernier for his performance against St Johnstone.

The 33-year-old has come under plenty of scrutiny this season but in a solid performance at McDiarmid Park on 1 December.

Gers picked up a 1-0 win courtesy of a Jason Holt own goal and managed to hold on to their lead to secure the three points.

Ferguson told BBC Sportsound on 1 December at 2:04pm: "Rangers deserved the points, but was it the complete performance that the fans were looking for? No.

"St Johnstone started very well, controlled it at times. Rangers gradually got a foothold.

"It was clear to see Propper was struggling, so Balogun came on and that gave Rangers a confidence throughout the side.

"Someone who's been much criticised this season had an excellent game - James Tavernier."

James Tavernier needs to perform consistently for Rangers

Tavernier's commendable performance against St Johnstone showcases his ability to be a key player for Gers, but it also underscores the inconsistency that has frustrated fans this season.

As a captain and one of the team's most experienced players, the Englishman is expected to deliver not just in isolated matches but consistently across the season.

His role extends beyond mere defending as he's pivotal in the final third with his goal-scoring and assist records.

However, his defensive lapses have been highlighted, leading to fan frustration.

The Ibrox faithful look for reliability and leadership from their captain, expecting him to set the standard in every game.

When Tavernier performs at his best, Rangers often look more cohesive and threatening.

His inconsistency, therefore, not only affects the defensive solidity but also the team's overall morale and tactical execution.
