Rangers asked to take immediate action after what player did in Nice

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Derek Ferguson has urged Rangers to ban players from using social media immediately after matches.

The former Rangers midfielder was reacting to news that Dujon Sterling faces a possible three-match suspension for comments posted on X after the 4-1 win in Nice on Thursday (28 November).

Sterling, who started the emphatic victory, asked why the referee was "desperate" to give Nice a penalty in the first half.

Former FIFA referee Keith Hackett told Ibrox News there is now a serious chance of the right-back being punished by UEFA.

And Ferguson believes it is down to Rangers to stop players from putting themselves in such situations.

"Social media, if I was a manager, it's the first thing I'd ban," he told Ibrox News. "You're emotional after a game, sometimes a bit excited as well. You don't give yourself a chance to think.

"Players should not be going on social media, and I'm sure some clubs do already ban it 24 hours before and after games. That's something Rangers need to look at now.

"It's something that needs to be addressed at the club."

Dujon Sterling calls out referee in Nice v Rangers

Sterling very much had a point with his comments. He was specifically referring to the first half in which the man in the middle, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, awarded a penalty to Nice before being called over to review three different incidents.

It was comical to say the least, but ultimately nothing was given and the game resumed. Given the emphatic nature of the Gers' win, not a lot more was made of that particular incident - or incidents.

However, Sterling's post on social media means it is now a talking point, and he faces missing some key matches either side of Christmas in the Europa League.

Let's just hope justice prevails and UEFA let him off with a slap on the wrist.
