Dujon Sterling ban verdict shared after ridiculous Rangers incident

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Derek Ferguson is hopeful "common sense prevails" and Dujon Sterling avoids a Rangers ban for a social media post sent after the win over Nice.

Sterling took to X soon after the 4-1 Europa League victory on Thursday (28 November) to take an apparent dig at the referee.

The moment in question came in the first half when the official, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, reviewed three separate incidents in one phase of play to check for a penalty.

While Ferguson says it is disappointing Sterling sent the message, he can understand why the right-back felt frustrated.

"It's a shame he's gone ahead and done that, but I can also see where he's come from," he exclusively told Ibrox News.

"VAR said they're looking at a handball, then a tackle, then a handball - it was ridiculous. So Sterling's frustration I can understand.

"Hopefully common sense prevails and he doesn't get a ban."

Rangers will be eager to have Dujon Sterling v Tottenham

Sterling is now in possession of the right-back slot, which not many expected to be the case before a ball was kicked this season.

James Tavernier has now been benched for successive games and it looks likely that Sterling will enjoy a prolonged run in the starting line-up.

However, should he be banned for three games - something former FIFA referee Keith Hackett has told Ibrox News is a possibility - then that will all change.

Next up for the Gers in Europe is a visit of English Premier League side Tottenham, a game in which Philippe Clement will of course want his strongest XI available for.

Let's just hope nothing comes of this and UEFA decide against taking any sort of action.
