Kevin Muscat backed to replace Philippe Clement at Rangers as 'real winner' jumps out as option

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Kevin Muscat immediately jumps out as a strong candidate to be the next Rangers manager, according to Derek Ferguson.

The Australian has just secured a third title in as many countries after winning the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Port, having been in the frame for the Ibrox job before Philippe Clement was appointed last year.

With the Belgian now struggling after falling nine points off the pace in the Scottish Premiership already Ferguson believes there will be plenty of able candidates who would be interested in replacing him if he is sacked.

And in ex-Gers defender Muscat the "real winner" is seen as an obvious port of call if there is an opening to get a deal done.

The 51-year-old has been tipped for success in Europe by compatriot and former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou [ESPN, 9 November] amid regular links to the Gers job as Clement comes under increasing pressure from fans.

It remains to be seen whether there is an appetite for another managerial change at any point this season but Ferguson expects Muscat to be a prime candidate if so.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: "Muscat jumps out right away. He was in the running before Clement got the job.

"I could see maybe Muscat, with a different way of working. He's obviously sampled Scottish football in terms of he played here. He was a real competitor, a real winner.

"I've heard a lot of good things, so I think if there was an option and he was willing to come in, with the mess that surrounds the club at the moment [he would make sense].

"But listen, there's going to be loads of people out there, good managers, good coaches, that would be willing to take the Rangers job.

"People want to work [here], and when you look at what Rangers have got at their disposal in terms of the quality of player, which is a wee bit like you could sit on the fence on whether it is top quality or not, but there will be a coach or a manager out there who would think that he can get better out of that group of players.

"So there will be somebody waiting in the wings that would take the Rangers job."
