Steven Gerrard is facing scathing criticism from supporters as the former Rangers boss fights to save his job at Al-Ettifaq, according to Football Scotland.

Jack Herrall's report [3 November] details how a run of measly results has led Gerrard to incur jeers from his own fanbase, with the club placed 11th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League.

The club have scored just eight goals in nine games so far this season, and have fallen 14 points behind leaders Al-Hilal as the Gers title winner now faces an uphill battle for his long-term future.

Gerrard has previously been mentioned as a possible replacement for Philippe Clement at Ibrox, with Hugh Keevins writing on 29 September that his name keeps cropping up in discussions if the Belgian were to be replaced (Sunday Mail).

Steven Gerrard would be welcomed back by many Rangers fans

From a Rangers perspective, the club are a far cry from the distant memories of what Gerrard brought to Ibrox in 2021.

The Scottish Premiership title for the 55th time etched his name into the club's folklore forever, and aside from the more recent Europa League run, it has largely been a chaotic downward spiral since.

Philippe Clement appears a galaxy away from securing title number 56, and the danger of falling out of the top two come the end of the season has now become very real following Wednesday night's loss to Aberdeen [30 October].

It's fair to say while it wouldn't be all, a large chunk of the Light Blues fanbase would welcome Gerrard back with open arms - though this has been played down of late.

Rangers have not found a winning formula with many other managers in the current era, and Gerrard has not hit the heights with the other clubs of his managerial career so far - sometimes a match is a match.
