Joe Lewis jokingly slammed Kris Boyd for suggesting Aberdeen would not be able to keep hold of Jimmy Thelin after beating Rangers 2-1 on Wednesday (30 October).

The former Dons goalkeeper agreed with Boyd that the Gers will only be able to rise up the Scottish Premiership table if Philippe Clement is sacked, though he was adamant that Thelin would not replace him.

Clement's side are now nine points adrift from Aberdeen and Old Firm rivals Celtic, having lost at Pittodrie in a crucial league clash, with the majority of fans now calling for the manager to be sacked.

Speaking via Sky Sports, quoted by the Daily Record [31 October], Lewis said: "I quite enjoyed Boydy’s act of desperation to try and tout [Thelin] for a bigger job.

"That's Rangers' best chance at the moment [of catching up with Aberdeen] is if Clement goes and he [Thelin] goes. But that's not happening anyway as he is going to stay with us."

Philippe Clement on edge of Rangers sack after Aberdeen defeat

Fans have been calling for Clement's sack for a while now, and the 2-1 defeat at Pittodrie has to be the final nail in the coffin.

The Light Blues have already dropped out of the Champions League this season, falling into the Europa League, and now any hope of lifting the Scottish Premiership is drifting away.

Clement's side are getting further and further away from the top two spots, and when also factoring in the disappointing 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock, there is little the Belgian can do to save his job.

In addition to this, considering how good of a season the Dons are having so far, it seems unlikely that the Gers will manage to draw Thelin over to Ibrox, even with the amount of history at the club.

Aberdeen have not lifted the league title since the 1984/85 season, with Celtic and Rangers dominating the division over the decades, but that has the potential to change if Thelin continues at Pittodrie.
