Chris Sutton admits Aberdeen will give him "food for thought" about their ability to split Rangers and Celtic if they win at Parkhead.

Jimmy Thelin's side travel to the Green side of Glasgow to face Brendan Rodgers' Hoops on Saturday (19 October) while the Gers make the trip to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October).

Although Sutton remains sceptical about the Dons' ability to challenge for the title this term, he insists that a win against Celtic could be enough to make him believe they could finish above Rangers.

Writing for the Daily Record on Saturday (19 October) he said: "Let’s be clear about a couple of things. I’m not going to sit here and suggest that Thelin’s team are moving into position to rip off Celtic’s crown.

"My old side has far too much strength in depth and ability to be overcome by any of the challengers outside of their own city.

"Not even a Dons victory today would change that notion in my head, although it would give me food for thought in terms of their ability to split the Old Firm and get ahead of Rangers if the Ibrox side can't properly sort themselves out."

What has Celtic great Chris Sutton said about Rangers and Ibrox?

Rangers will know that Aberdeen aren't just here to make up the numbers this season. While there is still an awful lot of football to be played this term, the Dons have started in exceptional form under their new manager.

Of course, they are yet to play either of the Old Firm sides and that will be the true test of their ability, however, a win over Celtic on Saturday would lay down a huge marker and send them top of the Premiership table.

The Gers simply cannot worry about what is going on at Parkhead. They need to focus on picking up a result themselves when they travel to Rugby Park.

A win over Derek McInnes' side will help close the gap to at least one of the two sides at the top of the table currently and that is all that the Light Blues should be thinking about at this moment in time.

Hopefully, Aberdeen and Celtic will play out a bore draw which can allow the Gers to move closer to the top of the table and end any suggestions that they're already out of the title race.
