Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan have clashed over a Jack Butland verdict after Rangers' Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic.

Philippe Clement's side slipped further behind their Glasgow rivals in the race for the Premiership title with a 3-0 defeat at Parkhead on Sunday (1 September) to increase the pressure on the Belgian.

While Butland has been lauded during his time in Glasgow, his performance against the Hoops left a lot to be desired with Jordan suggesting the Englishman wouldn't get into Brendan Rodgers' side.

Speaking on Up Front with Simon Jordan (5 September, 26:33) he said: "Were there any of those Rangers players that would get in that Celtic side?

"If it is a striker phenomenon, do any of those Rangers players get in the Celtic side?"

Souness replied: "The goalkeeper does."

Jordan hit back saying: "What he does better than Kasper Schmeichel? What do you make of that? You're just making a case to make a case.

"What does that tell you, the goalkeeper that wasn't battered and he picks the goalkeeper."

Souness responded: "Historically, he is a really good goalkeeper."

Would Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland get in the Celtic side?

It's safe to say that Butland hasn't quite matched the expectations that he set last season in the early stages of this year's campaign, especially in the Old Firm derby where his positioning was called into question.

Ultimately, the Englishman is making far too many errors and that is costing the Gers, but he is also having to make far too many saves in each and every game which would suggest that the defence has some weaknesses.

Whether or not he is better than Schmeichel is almost a meaningless discussion. Goalkeepers don't tend to win you titles and it is unlikely that this year's race will be decided by who is between the posts for each club.

Hopefully, the team in front of Butland will begin to find their rhythm after the international break.

If the Light Blues can start scoring goals more regularly, they won't be relying on their keeper to keep them in games.
