Rangers transfer window end leaves Philippe Clement with major Cyriel Dessers worry

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Rangers don't have proper cover for Cyriel Dessers and failure to sign a striker this summer has left them short, says Derek Ferguson.

The Nigerian international has scored five goals so far this season as the only fully-fit number nine, while the Light Blues only signed youngster Hamza Igamane during a frustrating window.

The Moroccan hasn't even made his debut yet and the picture up front in Philippe Clement's squad has left Ferguson concerned about what would happen if Dessers got hurt, saying the Gers don't have enough to get through until at least the January market.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: "No. And the reason I say that is because if Dessers picks up an injury. The way Rangers play Dessers fits the system because he's a bigger boy, he's bustling, there's a physicality.

"Yep, he's banging in the goals at the moment but if he gets injured who comes in? You look at Danilo who's just come back from injury, yeah he got his goal at the weekend, but he's a totally different player to Dessers.

"Danilo's a box player, he comes alive in the box. Dessers runs the channels, stretches the game, he's got that physicality. So that is a worry."

Rangers signing Hamza Igamane not involved for Philippe Clement

Danilo may have netted his first of the season in the 6-0 win over Ross County but after Kris Boyd tipped him to be a big feature of the campaign during the summer [Scottish Sun, 5 July] the pundit has since been left questioning what is happening amid the Brazilian's early-season struggles [Scottish Sun, 19 August].

Igamane may prove to be a crucial but until he is involved it is impossible to tell, and currently Dessers is effectively the only definite striker option, just as it was when last season ended.
